Overview
Starting with Link firmware version 1.0.2, multiple Link units can be configured to extend the wireless network.
This wireless network extension is similar to a wireless bridge and does not require physical network cables to run between the Ethernet port on each Link.
Wireless network extension allows devices such as iPhones, iPads, Serv Pro units, etc. to communicate with each other when they are connected to different Link units.
NOTE: This feature is only intended for use with Teradek Link access points, and is not supported for configuration with third-party routers or access points.
Configuration
Refer to the attached PDF guide for step-by-step instructions on configuring a Client Link to join a Main Link.
These same steps can be used for configuring additional Client Links to a Main Link, with IP addresses adjusted according to your specific setup.
DHCP Server Conflicts
If the Main Link's "LAN" Ethernet port (or the "WAN" Ethernet port, if the WAN port is configured in firmware to act as a second LAN port) is connected to an existing network which already has a DHCP Server, the Main Link's built-in DHCP Server must be disabled to prevent conflicts with the existing network. Otherwise, you will have multiple DHCP Servers operating on the same network.
Wi-Fi Roaming
Each Link that is part of the wireless network -- both the Main Link and one or more Client Link units -- is creating its own Wi-Fi network with a unique network name (network SSID).
As mentioned in the configuration guide, the Main Link broadcasts (2) Wi-Fi networks, while each Client Link broadcasts (1) Wi-Fi network.
You cannot use the same Wi-Fi network name / SSID for each Link, they must have unique Wi-Fi network names!
- Since each Wi-Fi network name is unique, client devices like iPhones will not seamlessly roam between the Links in the same way that they would when multiple wireless access points all shared the same network name/network SSID. This wireless Client / Main Link configuration process does not create a "mesh" network.
- Additionally, if client devices are moved between physical locations, you will need to manually connect your client device to the Link that is closest to that location and with the best signal strength.
